The 7mm Remington Magnum is a belted .284" magnum for elk, mule deer and other big game at longer range. Remington introduced it in 1962, shortening and necking down the .375 H&H case so it fits a standard-length long action with a magnum bolt face. Loads on this page run 139 to 175 grains at 2,760 to 3,240 fps.

For deer and pronghorn, the 139 to 150 grain soft points and polymer tips (Core-Lokt, InterLock, Deer Season XP, Power-Point) shoot flat and open fast. For elk and moose, step up to 160 to 175 grain bonded or copper bullets such as the Barnes TSX, Trophy Bonded Tip or Fusion. The 168 grain Berger Hybrid Hunter and 175 grain ELD-X are for long shots. Superformance loads run faster than standard loads with the same bullet, so recheck your zero if you switch. This cartridge does not interchange with 7mm PRC or 7mm Weatherby Magnum.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros

  • Against .270 Winchester: heavier bullets at similar or higher speed, for more energy on elk.
  • Against .300 Win Mag: flatter-shooting bullets with less recoil.
  • Against .30-06: about 150 to 200 fps more with 150 grain bullets of higher BC, for flatter shots past 300 yards.
  • Fits a standard-length long action (with a magnum bolt face) rather than a magnum-length one.

Cons

  • Against .308 or .270: more recoil and muzzle blast.
  • Against 7mm PRC: the belted case headspaces on the belt, and some older rifles have twists too slow for the longest 7mm bullets.
  • Magnum powder charges wear out barrel throats sooner than a 7mm-08.
  • More gun than you need for deer inside 200 yards.
