Hornady markets the Superformance 154-grain SST for large game. The SST is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .530, and this load leaves the muzzle at 3,100 fps. At 300 yards it still carries 2,261 ft-lbs.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 154-grain, an InterLock soft point at the same weight, the SST starts 65 fps faster and holds up better at distance. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the SST about 15 inches sideways and the American Whitetail about 20. Zeroed at 100 yards, the SST drops about 41 inches at 500 and the American Whitetail about 46. Compared with Black Hills Gold's 154-grain load of the same Hornady SST bullet, the Superformance starts 100 fps faster, and the Black Hills kicks about 4 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Superformance SST if you hunt large game and want a polymer-tipped bullet with a flatter path and more speed.
