Product Overview
Remington markets its Core-Lokt ammunition for big game. The Core-Lokt PSP is a pointed soft point: a lead-core bullet with exposed lead at a pointed nose. Remington rates it at a G1 BC of .390, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,175 fps.
Compared with Prvi Partizan's 140-grain PSP, another pointed soft point with the same G1 BC, the Core-Lokt starts 75 fps faster and stays ahead all the way to 500 yards. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Core-Lokt about 21 inches sideways and the Prvi Partizan about 22. That is how far from the aim point each bullet lands if you make no correction. Compared with Sellier & Bellot's 140-grain SP, the gap is much wider: the Sellier & Bellot starts 58 fps slower, loses speed faster, and the same wind pushes it about 43 inches at 500 yards.
Buy the Core-Lokt if you want the traditional lead-core soft point Remington markets for big game. Pick the Prvi Partizan 140-grain PSP if you want a similar pointed soft point and don't need the extra speed. Pick the Sellier & Bellot 140-grain SP only if your shots stay close; at 200 yards the two are within an inch of each other in drop from a 100-yard zero. Pick Federal's Trophy Copper 140-grain if you need a bullet with no lead core; Federal markets the Trophy Copper line for a "wide range of medium and big game." For long shots in wind, the heavier HSM Trophy Gold 180-grain Berger VLD, a long, low-drag hunting bullet, drifts about 13 inches at 500 yards in the same wind, but it kicks much harder in the same rifle.
- Carries 1,881 ft-lbs at 300 yards; Sellier & Bellot's 140-grain SP 1,224
- Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 43 inches at 500; Prvi Partizan's 140-grain PSP about 46
- Carries 48 ft-lbs more at the muzzle than Federal's Trophy Copper 140-grain: 3,133 against 3,085
- Kicks about 3 percent harder than Prvi Partizan's 140-grain PSP in the same rifle
- Has a lead core; Federal's Trophy Copper 140-grain is a copper bullet with no lead core
- A plain exposed-lead soft point; Winchester's Deer Season XP 140-grain has a polymer tip, and Winchester markets it for deer hunting
