The .300 AAC Blackout is a .30 caliber AR-15 cartridge for short-range deer and hogs and for suppressed shooting. It puts a .308" bullet in a shortened case from the .223 family; AAC developed it with Remington, and SAAMI approved it in 2011. An AR-15 needs only a new barrel; the bolt and 30-round magazines stay. Loads come in two kinds: supersonic at about 1,900 to 2,100 fps, and heavy subsonic near 1,000 fps for suppressed rifles.
For deer and hogs at short range, pick a supersonic expanding load such as the Barnes 120gr or Hornady 135gr FTX. For suppressed shooting, the 208gr FMJ is for practice and the 190gr Sub-X is built to expand at subsonic speed. Subsonic loads may not cycle a rifle gassed for supersonic ammo, so test a box first. Never let a Blackout round near a 5.56 rifle: it chambers, and firing it can wreck the gun.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Keeps the AR-15 bolt and 30-round magazines; converting a 5.56 rifle takes only a barrel.
- Subsonic 190 to 208gr bullets carry far more weight than any subsonic 5.56 load, which is why it is so common behind a suppressor.
- It was designed around a 9-inch barrel, so short rifles and pistols lose less of their velocity than a short 5.56 does.
- Against 7.62x39: similar supersonic ballistics in an AR-15 with standard magazines.
Cons
- Against 5.56: supersonic loads run about 1,000 fps slower and drop much faster past 200 yards.
- Subsonic loads at about 1,000 fps arc steeply, so shots past 100 yards take big holdovers.
- Supersonic and subsonic loads hit at different points, so switching means a new zero or a written hold.
- The round fits in a 5.56 chamber, and firing it there can destroy the rifle, so mixed-caliber owners must mark mags and ammo.
