Winchester markets the Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain for big game. Its bullet is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .493, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,100 fps. At 300 yards it still carries 2,139 ft-lbs.
Compared with Remington's Core-Lokt Tipped 150-grain, another polymer-tipped 150, the Silvertip trails by a little. The Core-Lokt Tipped starts 30 fps faster, and at 500 yards a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 15 inches sideways against about 16 for the Silvertip. Compared with Federal's Fusion 150-grain, a bonded soft point, the Silvertip starts 50 fps faster, and the same wind pushes both about 16 inches at 500 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Silvertip drops about 42 inches at 500 and the Fusion about 43.
Buy the Silvertip if you hunt big game and want a polymer-tipped bullet that holds up in wind. Pick the Core-Lokt Tipped if you want a touch more speed and a little less drift; Remington also markets it for big game. Pick the Fusion if you prefer a bonded soft point with a little less recoil; Federal says it is "specifically built for deer hunting." If a plain soft point for closer shots is all you need, Remington's Core-Lokt 150-grain PSP is the exposed-lead choice, and Remington markets it for big game as well.
