The .300 Winchester Magnum is a belted .30 caliber magnum for elk, moose and bears at long range, and U.S. military snipers have used it in rifles such as the M2010. Winchester introduced it in 1963 on the .375 H&H case, short enough for a standard-length long action with a magnum bolt face. It fires the same .308" bullets as the .30-06, about 250 to 300 fps faster at the same weight.
The loads here run 150 to 180 grains at 2,900 to 3,260 fps. The 150 grain loads, including Deer Season XP, are for deer and pronghorn at long range. For elk, moose and bears, choose 165 to 180 grain loads with tougher bullets, such as the Barnes TSX or Fusion. The Copper Impact load is lead free. Recoil is heavy enough that a muzzle brake or a heavier rifle helps most shooters.
