The .243 Winchester combines flat trajectory with light recoil, making it popular for deer hunting and introducing new shooters to centerfire rifles. With a 100-grain bullet at 2,854 fps and a 100-yard zero, expect about 3.8 inches of drop at 200 yards, 14.3 inches at 300 yards, and 33.1 inches at 400 yards. The cartridge retains over 720 ft-lbs of energy at 400 yards—adequate for deer with good shot placement, though marginal for larger game.

Zeroing the .243 Winchester
Every table in this section uses the same reference load as the calculator above, 100gr G1 .315 at 2,854 fps, with a 1.5" sight height over the bore, at standard conditions (59°F, sea level, no wind for drop; 10 mph crosswind for drift). A hunting rifle with a scope in standard rings sits about 1.5" over the bore; the zero you choose sets how far you can hold on hair without thinking about the range. Key terms
- Near zero
- Where the bullet first climbs up through the line of sight. It starts below the sight, because the sight sits above the barrel.
- Far zero
- Where it falls back down through the line of sight. A "200-yard zero" is the far zero; the near zero comes with it.
- Max ordinate
- The highest the bullet gets above the line of sight, between the two crossings. This is what makes a zero shoot high in the middle.
- Point blank range (MPBR)
- The zero that keeps the whole arc inside a vital zone for the longest distance, so you can aim at the centre and hold dead-on.
.243 Winchester with a 100-Yard Zero
Zeroed at 100 yards with a 1.5" sight height, the 100gr load first crosses the line of sight at 63 yards, peaks +0.1" at 81 yards, returns to zero at 100, and is -14.3" at 300 and -33.1" at 400 yards.

Zeroed at 200 yards with a 1.5" sight height, the 100gr load first crosses the line of sight at 30 yards, peaks +2.0" at 117 yards, returns to zero at 200, and is -8.5" at 300 and -25.5" at 400 yards.

Maximum Point Blank Range for the .243 Winchester
Maximum point blank range (MPBR) is the zero that keeps the bullet inside a vital zone, never more than half its height above or below the line of sight (an 8" zone is ±4"), for as far as possible. Zero at the distance in the table and you can hold dead-on from the muzzle to the far edge of the window.

MPBR assumes a centred hold, a level shot and no wind; it is a ceiling, not a licence to skip ranging. The far edge of the window is where the bullet has already fallen half the vital zone.
Which Zero Should You Use for the .243 Winchester?
The .243 Winchester does two jobs, and they want different zeros. For deer with this 100gr load, a 200-yard zero is the one: 2" high at 117 yards, inside an 8" vital zone to 257 yards, 8.5" low at 300. The maximum-point-blank-range zero for an 8" zone is almost the same distance, 257 yards, and stretches the window to 300, so a deer rifle can be set either way with little difference.
For coyotes and varmints the window is ±2", and here the 200-yard zero still wins over the 100: it holds inside 2" to 232 yards, while the 100-yard zero, which never climbs more than 0.1", falls out of the window at 169 yards. Lighter 55 to 75gr varmint bullets leave much faster and hold ±2" further still; run them in the calculator above rather than assume the 100gr figures.
The 300-yard zero is 6" high at 167 yards, more than a coyote's vitals and enough to matter on a small deer, so leave it to open-country shooters who range everything. Whatever you choose, the .243's light bullets drift more than their flat arc suggests: this load moves about 10" in a 10 mph crosswind at 300 yards, more than it drops with a 200-yard zero.
