Black Hills Gold 139-grain CX is for shooters who want a tipped bullet with no lead core. Black Hills loads it with Hornady's CX, a copper alloy bullet with a polymer tip. It leaves the muzzle at 3,100 fps with 2,966 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's Superformance 139-grain SST, a polymer-tipped bullet of the same weight with a lead core, the CX starts 140 fps slower and carries 273 ft-lbs less at the muzzle. In exchange, the SST kicks about 5 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 140-grain, a polymer-tipped load at nearly the same weight, the CX leaves the muzzle at the same 3,100 fps, and the two kick about the same in the same rifle.
Buy the Black Hills Gold 139-grain CX if you want a copper alloy bullet with no lead core at 139 grains. Pick the Superformance 139-grain SST if a lead core is fine and you want the faster start; Hornady markets it for large game.
