The .270 Winchester is a long-action deer and pronghorn cartridge that Winchester introduced in 1925 in its Model 54 rifle. It fires a .277-inch bullet, a diameter few other cartridges use. The loads on this page push 130 grain bullets at 3,050 to 3,060 fps and 150 grain bullets at about 2,800 to 2,850 fps.
Every load listed is a hunting load, so the choice is bullet weight. The 130 grain loads, such as Winchester Super-X Power-Point, shoot flattest and suit deer, pronghorn and sheep in open country. The 140 and 150 grain loads, such as the Nosler Partition 150gr, hold together better on elk and large mule deer. A .270 rifle cannot fire 7mm (.284-inch) ammunition, even though the two bores sound close.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Against a 150 grain .30-06 deer load, a 130 grain .270 load shoots flatter with less recoil.
- Enough bullet weight at 150 grains for elk at moderate range.
- Recoil is milder than .30 caliber magnums while still reaching past 300 yards with a flat path.
Cons
- Heaviest common factory bullet is about 150 grains, lighter than the 180 grain .30-06 loads many elk and moose hunters prefer.
- It needs a long action, unlike the short-action 7mm-08 or 6.5 Creedmoor.
- Few heavy, high-BC bullet designs in .277 compared with 7mm or .30 caliber, so long-range options are thinner.
- Kicks harder than the .243 or 6.5 Creedmoor, which matters for young or small-framed shooters.
