Product Overview
Federal lists its 90-grain ELD-X as a big-game load. It is loaded with the ELD-X, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .409, in a nickel-plated brass case, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,150 fps. At 300 yards it still carries 1,219 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 90-grain ELD-X, the two use the same bullet at the same speed, so drop, wind and recoil match; only the case differs. Compared with Federal's Power-Shok Copper 85-grain, a copper hollow point with no lead core, the ELD-X starts 50 fps slower but is 525 fps faster by 400 yards. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 12 inches sideways and the Power-Shok Copper about 24. From a 100-yard zero, the ELD-X drops about 23 inches at 400 and the copper load about 30.
Buy Federal's 90-grain ELD-X for big game where shots may stretch past 300 yards and a crosswind is likely. Pick the Precision Hunter if you prefer a plain brass case; nothing else changes. Pick Hornady's Custom Lite 87-grain SST if recoil matters most and your shots stay short. Pick the Power-Shok Copper if you want a bullet with no lead core and keep your shots close; it also kicks about 10 percent less in the same rifle.
