Product Overview
Federal markets the American Eagle 75-grain JHP for varmints and predators, for everything from prairie dogs to coyotes. The bullet is a jacketed hollow point: a copper jacket over a lead core, with an open nose and no polymer tip. It has a G1 BC of .234 and leaves the muzzle at 3,375 fps.
Compared with Remington's Premier AccuTip-V 75-grain, the American Eagle starts at the same speed and kicks the same in the same rifle, but it loses speed sooner. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the American Eagle about 22 inches sideways and the Remington about 14. Compared with Hornady's Superformance Varmint 75-grain V-Max, the American Eagle starts 205 fps slower. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 26 inches at 400 and the Hornady about 18. The Hornady kicks about 7 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the American Eagle if most of your prairie dog and coyote shots are close: out to 200 yards the same wind moves it about 5 inches, against about 3 for the Remington. Pick the Remington Premier AccuTip-V if you shoot farther; it drifts about 8 inches less at 400 yards for the same recoil. Pick the Hornady Superformance Varmint if you want the flattest path of the three and don't mind a little more kick.
