Product Overview
Remington lists its High Performance 80-grain PSP as a big-game load. PSP stands for pointed soft point, a jacketed lead-core bullet with lead showing at the tip. It is rated at a G1 BC of .255 and leaves the muzzle at 3,350 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 10 inches at 300.
Compared with Hornady's 80-grain Outfitter CX, the Remington starts 150 fps faster, yet the two stay close downrange. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the Remington about 20 inches sideways and the Outfitter about 19. The Remington kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Fiocchi's Hyperformance 80-grain TTSX, rated at a G1 BC of .331, the Remington loses ground in the wind: the same wind pushes the Fiocchi about 15 inches at 400 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Remington drops about 25 inches at 400 and the Fiocchi about 23.
Buy the Remington if you want a lead-core soft point for big game and your shots stay inside 300 yards, where it drops within about half an inch of the Fiocchi TTSX. Pick the Hyperformance TTSX if your shots may stretch to 400 yards in wind. Pick the Outfitter CX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and a little less recoil. For varmints and predators, Federal markets its American Eagle 75-grain JHP as a varmint load, and it kicks about 11 percent less than the Remington.
