Product Overview
Hornady Custom 87-grain V-MAX is a polymer-tipped .243 Winchester load that Hornady sells for medium and large game. A polymer tip sits in a thin varmint jacket over the lead core. It leaves the muzzle at 3,240 fps with 2,028 ft-lbs and a G1 BC of .400.
Zeroed at 200 yards, it drops 5.8 inches at 300 and 17.0 inches at 400. From a 100-yard zero it drops 21.9 inches at 400.
If you're cross-shopping, Hornady's Superformance Varmint 75-grain V-Max starts 340 fps faster on a G1 BC of .330 and drops 14.7 inches at 400 from a 200-yard zero. Remington's Premier 75-grain AccuTip starts 135 fps faster and drops 16.8 inches off that zero.
- The highest G1 BC of the .243 varmint loads
- Drops within half an inch of Remington's Premier 75-grain AccuTip at 400 yards from a 200-yard zero, on 12 grains more bullet
- Still moving at 2,319 fps at 400 yards
- A lead core, so it is out where lead-free ammunition is required
- Hornady's Superformance Varmint 75-grain V-Max kicks about 16 percent less in the same rifle
- The thin-jacketed V-MAX is Hornady's varmint bullet, which is unusual in a load listed for medium and large game
