Federal markets its Trophy Copper 85-grain for medium and big game. The Trophy Copper is Federal's polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .391, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,200 fps. At 300 yards it still carries 1,163 ft-lbs.
Compared with Federal's 85-grain Barnes TSX, an open copper hollow point, the Trophy Copper leaves the muzzle at the same speed with the same recoil, and its tipped bullet holds up better in wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the Trophy Copper about 21 inches sideways and the TSX about 25. Compared with Hornady's Custom Lite 87-grain SST, which Hornady markets as a reduced-recoil hunting load, the Trophy Copper starts 400 fps faster. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Trophy Copper drops about 10 inches at 300 and the Custom Lite about 14. The Custom Lite kicks about 10 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Trophy Copper if you want the copper big-game bullet that holds up best in wind among Federal's 85-grain copper loads. Pick Federal's Barnes TSX if you prefer an open copper hollow point; inside 300 yards the two stay within about an inch of each other in the same wind. Pick the Custom Lite if recoil matters more to you than reach. For varmints, Hornady markets its Custom 87-grain V-Max as a varmint load, and it kicks about 6 percent more than the Trophy Copper.
