How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. Product Overview
Federal markets the Vital-Shok 100-grain Nosler Partition for big game at close to mid-range distances. The Nosler Partition is a two-core bullet: a wall inside the copper jacket splits the lead into a front core and a rear core. It has a G1 BC of .384, leaves the muzzle at 2,850 fps and still carries 1,048 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards.
Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 100-grain SP, the Partition starts 110 fps slower but holds its speed better, and by 500 yards the two are nearly even. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Partition about 25 inches sideways and the Power-Shok about 26. The Power-Shok kicks about 4 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Fusion 95-grain, which Federal builds for deer hunting, the Partition starts 130 fps slower and shoots less flat. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 57 inches at 500 and the Fusion about 51. The Fusion kicks about 5 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Partition if you want Federal's two-core bullet for big game at close to mid range, with a little less recoil than the Power-Shok. Pick the Power-Shok 100-grain SP if you want a plain soft point that Federal markets for medium and big game and that matches the Partition in the wind. Pick the Fusion if you hunt deer and want a flatter path at longer range. For more speed, Winchester's Deer Season XP 95-grain, built for deer hunters, leaves the muzzle 250 fps faster than the Partition.
- A G1 BC of .384, against .355 for the Federal Power-Shok 100-grain SP
- Nearly even with the Federal Power-Shok 100-grain SP by 500 yards, 1,779 fps against 1,785, despite the slower start
- Kicks about 4 percent less than the Federal Power-Shok 100-grain SP in the same rifle
- Drops about 13 inches at 300 yards from a 100-yard zero; the Winchester Deer Season XP 95-grain about 11
- Carries 1,803 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 142 fewer than the Federal Power-Shok 100-grain SP
- In a 10 mph crosswind at 500 yards it drifts about 25 inches; the Federal Fusion 95-grain about 24
