How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Federal markets its 95-grain Berger Hybrid Hunter for medium and big game. The Berger Hybrid Hunter is an open-tip hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .43, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,050 fps. At 400 yards it still carries 1,040 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 95-grain, the Berger leaves the muzzle a little slower but passes it before 200 yards and is 98 fps faster at 400. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Berger about 12 inches sideways and the Deer Season XP about 14. Compared with Federal Power-Shok 100-grain, a plain soft point, the Berger starts 90 fps faster and kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Berger drops about 46 inches at 500 yards and the Power-Shok about 54.

Buy the Berger Hybrid Hunter for medium and big game in open country, where shots can stretch toward 500 yards and wind matters most. Pick the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer at closer range; Winchester built it for deer hunters. Pick the Power-Shok 100-grain if you want a heavier soft point and your shots stay short. Hornady markets its Custom 87-grain V-Max for varmints, not big game, so it is the pick only if varmints are the target.

Strengths
  • A 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 20 inches at 500 yards, against about 26 for Fiocchi Hyperformance 95-grain SST
  • Carries 1,040 ft-lbs at 400 yards, 147 more than Federal Fusion 95-grain
  • Leaves the muzzle 100 fps faster than Black Hills Gold 95-grain SST
Limitations
  • Kicks about 4 percent more than Fiocchi Hyperformance 95-grain SST in the same rifle
  • Kicks about 3 percent more than Federal Fusion 95-grain in the same rifle
  • Leaves the muzzle 50 fps slower than Winchester's Deer Season XP 95-grain
