Winchester markets its Copper Impact 85-grain for big game, "deer, elk, and anything in between." It uses Winchester's Copper Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core. It leaves the muzzle at 3,260 fps with 2,006 ft-lbs of energy, the fastest start of the 85-grain copper .243 loads on this site.
Compared with Federal's Trophy Copper 85-grain, another polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, the Copper Impact starts 60 fps faster with 74 more ft-lbs at the muzzle. The extra speed adds little recoil: the Copper Impact kicks about 2 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Custom Lite 87-grain SST, which Hornady markets as a reduced-recoil hunting load, the Copper Impact starts 460 fps faster. The Custom Lite kicks about 12 percent less in the same rifle.
