Federal markets Fusion for big game and says it was built specifically for deer hunting. The 95-grain load uses the Fusion Soft Point, a soft point whose copper jacket is fused to its lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .376, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,980 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 300 yards.
Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 95-grain, another load its maker built for deer hunters, the Fusion starts 120 fps slower. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes both about 8 inches sideways, and the Deer Season XP drops about 11 inches from the same zero. The Fusion kicks about 4 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's 95-grain Berger Hybrid Hunter, rated at a G1 BC of .43, the gap grows with distance. The Berger starts 70 fps faster, and at 500 yards the same wind pushes the Fusion about 24 inches and the Berger about 20.
Buy the Fusion if you hunt deer, most of your shots fall inside 300 yards, and you want a soft point with its jacket fused to the core. Pick the Deer Season XP if you want a little more speed and a slightly flatter path. Pick the Berger Hybrid Hunter if you hunt open country where long shots and steady wind are likely.
