We track 10 .260 Remington loads from 1 dealer. The cheapest delivered to AR, shipping included, is Hornady Superformance .260 Remington 129gr SST Ammo at $2.39 a round. By use: Hunting from $2.39 and Competition from $2.69.

The .260 Remington is a short-action deer and long-range target cartridge for bolt rifles and AR-10 pattern rifles. It is a .308 Winchester case necked down to 6.5mm (.264"). Remington introduced it in 1997, ten years before the 6.5 Creedmoor, and it fires the same bullets. Loads here run 120 to 140 grains at 2,700 to 3,026 fps.

For deer, pick a hunting bullet: the 129 grain SST, 130 grain AccuBond or 140 grain Core-Lokt. The 120 grain TTSX and E-Tip are lead-free copper. For paper and steel, the 130 grain ELD Match, Berger OTM and Nosler RDF are match bullets and should not be used on game. The .260 and 6.5 Creedmoor are not interchangeable; fire only .260 Remington in a .260 chamber.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros

  • Over .308: 6.5mm bullets with higher BC drift less in wind and recoil less with similar short-action rifles.
  • Brass can be formed from .308 Winchester cases, since it is the same case with a smaller neck.
  • Slightly more case capacity than 6.5 Creedmoor, so it matches Creedmoor velocities at lower pressure.

Cons

  • Far fewer factory loads and new rifles than 6.5 Creedmoor, which has taken most of its market.
  • The 2.800" max overall length forces long 140 grain and heavier bullets deep into the case.
  • Lighter bullets than a .308 or 7mm-08 leave less margin on elk.
