How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Hornady markets its Superformance 129-grain SST for medium game. The SST is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .485, and this load starts it at 2,930 fps.

Compared with Nosler's Trophy Grade 130-grain AccuBond, a bonded-core bullet with a polymer tip, the SST starts 230 fps faster and shoots flatter. Zeroed at 100 yards, the SST drops about 48 inches at 500 yards and the AccuBond about 58. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the SST about 18 inches sideways and the AccuBond about 20. The AccuBond kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with DoubleTap's 127-grain Barnes LRX, a copper bullet with no lead core, the SST starts 70 fps slower, and the two kick about the same in the same rifle.

Buy the SST if you hunt medium game and want a tipped lead-core bullet that starts nearly as fast as the LRX. Pick the Barnes LRX if you need a lead-free bullet; DoubleTap markets it for deer, hogs, antelope and bear. Pick the Trophy Grade AccuBond if softer recoil matters more than a flat path; Nosler markets it for deer-sized game. For practice on steel and paper, Hornady markets its 130-grain ELD Match as a target load, and the same 10 mph wind pushes it about 16 inches at 500 yards.

Strengths
  • Still carries 1,617 ft-lbs at 300 yards
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 300 yards; Nosler's Trophy Grade 130-grain AccuBond drops about 14
  • Leaves the muzzle 30 fps faster than HSM's 129-grain Hornady SP
Limitations
  • Carries 80 ft-lbs less muzzle energy than DoubleTap's 127-grain Barnes LRX
  • Nosler's Trophy Grade 130-grain AccuBond kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle
  • The lead core rules it out where a lead-free bullet is required; DoubleTap's 127-grain Barnes LRX is copper
