The .357 SIG is a bottlenecked pistol cartridge that SIG Sauer and Federal introduced in 1994 to match 125 grain .357 Magnum loads from a semi-auto. It pushes a 9mm (.355-inch) bullet at about 1,225 to 1,360 fps from a case necked down from 10mm Auto. Most .40 S&W pistols convert to it with a barrel swap.
The range FMJ loads (Federal American Eagle, Speer Lawman) are 124 or 125 grains at 1,350 fps, the same weight and speed as the common 125 grain duty hollow points like Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST, so practice and carry ammo shoot alike. The 135 and 147 grain loads give up about 125 fps for more bullet weight. Don't rechamber the same carry round over and over; the short neck lets the bullet set back into the case, which raises pressure.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Over 9mm: about 200 fps more with the same 124 to 125 grain bullet weight.
- Most .40 S&W pistols convert with a barrel swap and use the same magazines.
- Flatter trajectory than 9mm or .40 S&W at longer pistol distances.
Cons
- Sharper recoil and a louder report with more muzzle flash than 9mm.
- Magazine capacity matches .40 S&W, so you carry fewer rounds than a 9mm in the same frame.
- Repeated chambering can set the bullet back in the short neck.
- Fewer pistol models are chambered for it than for 9mm or .40 S&W.
