How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

Federal's HST 125-grain is the quickest of the 125-grain .357 SIG hollow points here, at 1,360 fps and 513 ft-lbs. HST is Federal's jacketed hollow point for personal defense. Its power factor of 170 makes USPSA major by 5 points. A 125-grain bullet needs 1,320 fps to make major, so this load has 40 fps to spare. From a 25-yard zero it drops 0.8 inch at 50 yards and 7.2 inches at 100.

Speer Gold Dot 125 and Winchester USA 125 trail it by 10 fps and 7 ft-lbs, with about 1 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol, a gap no shooter will feel. Sellier & Bellot 124 is the fast outlier: 116 fps quicker, with about 14 percent more recoil energy than the HST. The two Hornady loads go the other way. Critical Duty 135 and Hornady Custom 147 both leave at 1,225 fps, 135 fps slower; the Critical Duty has about 3 percent less recoil energy than the HST and the 147 about 15 percent more. At 100 yards the HST drops 1.2 inches more than the Sellier & Bellot, 1.2 inches less than the Hornady Custom 147, and 0.2 inch less than the Gold Dot.

Buy it for carry if you want standard .357 SIG recoil with a little more speed than the other 125-grain loads. Pick the Sellier & Bellot only if you want every fps and accept the recoil that comes with it, and pick a Hornady if you want the heavier bullet. For practice, Federal American Eagle 125 is the ball load to pair with the HST: it drops the same 7.2 inches at 100 yards and has about 1 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol.

Strengths
  • Its margin over USPSA major is 1.2 points wider than the Gold Dot 125 or Winchester USA 125
  • 63 ft-lbs more muzzle energy than the Hornady Critical Duty 135 and 23 more than the Hornady Custom 147
  • Still moving at 1,199 fps at 50 yards, 67 fps faster than the Hornady Custom 147 at that range
Limitations
  • Sellier & Bellot 124 carries 59 more ft-lbs at 50 yards (458 to 399)
  • The Hornady Custom 147 carries 42 ft-lbs more at 100 yards (367 to 325) despite its slower start
  • Power factor is 13 points below the Sellier & Bellot 124's 183
