Product Overview
Hornady's Custom 147-grain XTP is the heavyweight of the .357 SIG defensive loads here. The XTP is Hornady's jacketed hollow point, built for self-defense. It leaves at 1,225 fps with 490 ft-lbs, and its power factor of 180 clears the 165 USPSA major floor by 15.1 points, about 103 fps of velocity to spare. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.1 inches at 50 yards and 8.4 inches at 100, where it still carries 367 ft-lbs.
It gives up speed at the muzzle: 125 fps to Speer Gold Dot 125 and Winchester USA 125, 135 fps to Federal HST 125 and 251 fps to Sellier & Bellot 124. The heavier bullet holds on better. By 100 yards it carries 42 ft-lbs more than the HST, 47 more than the Gold Dot and 6 more than the Sellier & Bellot. The trade is recoil. In the same pistol it has about 15 percent more recoil energy than the HST, 17 percent more than the Gold Dot or Winchester, and 19 percent more than Hornady Critical Duty 135, which leaves at the same 1,225 fps with 12 grains less bullet. It drops 1.2 inches more than the HST at 100 yards and 2.4 inches more than the Sellier & Bellot, but inside 50 yards the gap to the HST is only 0.3 inch.
Buy it if energy at 100 yards matters more to you than muzzle speed and you can manage the heaviest recoil in this group. Recoil-sensitive shooters should take the Critical Duty 135 instead. Practice with 125-grain ball will not prepare you for this load: Federal American Eagle 125 has about 14 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol, so shoot a magazine of the 147 on every range trip.
