The 6.5mm Grendel is an AR-15 cartridge for deer and for reaching farther than 5.56 allows. It fires a .264" bullet from a short, fat case based on the .220 Russian, the same family as the 7.62x39. Bill Alexander and Janne Pohjoispää designed it at Alexander Arms in 2003, and SAAMI standardized it in 2010. The rifle needs a Grendel barrel, bolt and magazines, and a 30-round-size magazine holds 26.
The loads here run from 100 to 123gr at 2,480 to 2,755 fps. The Wolf 100gr, Prvi 110gr and Frontier 123gr FMJ loads are for the range. For steel at distance, pick a 123gr match bullet such as the Hornady ELD Match or Lapua Scenar. For deer and hogs, use the Barnes 115gr TAC-TX or Hornady 123gr SST.

Pros
- Against 5.56: 123gr bullets carry more energy and drift less past 400 yards, enough for deer.
- Against 7.62x39 in an AR: higher-BC bullets for a flatter path at the same size.
- It keeps the AR-15 lower receiver and the rifle's weight and handling.
- Against a .308 AR-10: much less recoil in a lighter rifle.
Cons
- A 5.56 upper can't be reused as is; it needs a Grendel bolt, barrel and magazines.
- A 30-round-size magazine holds 26 Grendel rounds.
- Against 6.5 Creedmoor: slower with lighter bullets, so it runs out of energy and drops more at long range.
- Against 6mm ARC on the same bolt: the ARC's 105 to 108gr match bullets shoot flatter.
