Hornady markets its 123-grain ELD Match for target and match shooting. It uses Hornady's ELD Match bullet, a polymer-tipped match bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .506. It leaves the muzzle at 2,580 fps.
Compared with Federal's American Eagle 120, the ELD Match starts 30 fps slower but pulls ahead in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD Match about 21 inches sideways and the American Eagle about 25. Compared with Nosler's Match Grade 123, the ELD Match starts 180 fps faster and drops less: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 64 inches at 500 and the Nosler about 75. In the same wind the Nosler drifts about 23 inches. The Nosler kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the ELD Match if you shoot steel and paper out to 500 yards and want less drift and drop than the American Eagle or the Nosler. Pick Federal's American Eagle 120 if most of your targets sit at 300 yards or closer, where its drop stays within half an inch of the ELD Match. Pick Nosler's Match Grade 123 if a lighter kick matters more to you than drop. For practice, Hornady's Frontier 123-grain FMJ is a full metal jacket load that leaves the muzzle at the same 2,580 fps; at 500 yards the same wind pushes it about 26 inches.
