Federal markets its American Eagle 120-grain OTM for competition and target shooting. The OTM is an open-tip match bullet, a jacketed bullet with a small opening at the nose. It is rated at a G1 BC of .421 and leaves the muzzle at 2,610 fps.

Compared with Hornady's 123-grain ELD Match, the American Eagle starts 30 fps faster but gives ground in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the American Eagle about 25 inches sideways and the ELD Match about 21. The ELD Match kicks about 4 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Nosler's Match Grade 123, the American Eagle leaves the muzzle 210 fps faster and drops less. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 67 inches at 500 and the Nosler about 75. The Nosler still drifts less in the same wind, about 23 inches at 500 yards.

Buy the American Eagle if your targets sit at 300 yards or closer, where its fast start keeps drop small and the same wind pushes it only about an inch and a half farther than the ELD Match. Pick Hornady's 123-grain ELD Match if you shoot out to 500 yards and wind is the main problem. Pick Nosler's Match Grade 123 if you want a softer kick and less drift, and don't mind more drop. For hunting, Federal's Fusion 120 is a soft point that Federal markets for big game, and it leaves the muzzle 10 fps slower.
