How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Barnes markets its VOR-TX 115-grain TAC-TX for medium-game hunting. The TAC-TX is a copper bullet with a polymer tip, a boat tail and no lead core, so it suits hunters who want a bullet without lead. It leaves the muzzle at 2,590 fps with 1,713 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with Federal's Fusion 120-grain, a soft point with its jacket bonded to a lead core, the Barnes leaves the muzzle 10 fps slower. It also kicks about 8 percent less in the same rifle, since its bullet is 5 grains lighter. Compared with Hornady's Custom 123-grain SST, a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead core, the Barnes is 10 fps faster at the muzzle but starts with 105 fewer ft-lbs, because the SST bullet is heavier. The SST also kicks about 14 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the Barnes if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and less recoil than either the Fusion or the SST. Pick the Fusion 120 if you are fine with lead and want a bonded soft point, which Federal markets for big game. Pick Hornady's Custom 123 SST if you want a heavier bullet with more energy at the muzzle, which Hornady markets for medium game. For practice, Prvi Partizan's 110-grain FMJ-BT is a full metal jacket load that kicks within 2 percent of the Barnes in the same rifle.

Strengths
  • Kicks about 10 percent less than AAC's Sabre Blade 123-grain Black Tip in the same rifle
  • Leaves the muzzle 352 fps faster than Alexander Arms' 129-grain SST
  • Kicks within 1 percent of Underwood's 110-grain Controlled Chaos while carrying a bullet 5 grains heavier
Limitations
  • Starts with 88 fewer ft-lbs than Federal's Fusion 120
  • Underwood's 110-grain Controlled Chaos leaves the muzzle 210 fps faster
  • Starts with 28 fewer ft-lbs than AAC's Sabre Blade 123-grain Black Tip
