Product Overview
Winchester says it engineered the Deer Season XP 150-grain for deer hunters. The bullet is Winchester's Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a G1 BC of .223, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,325 fps. The light bullet and quick start keep its path fairly flat for a deer load: zeroed at 100 yards, it lands about 8 inches low at 200 yards.
Compared with Hornady's Custom 165-grain FTX, the Winchester starts 125 fps faster and drops a little less at 300 yards, about 28 inches from the same 100-yard zero against about 30 for the FTX. In a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range, the 150 is pushed about 21 inches sideways by 300 yards and the 165 about 20, so neither has a real edge in wind. Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 170-grain InterLock, the Winchester is flatter and steadier: at 300 yards the 170 drops about 33 inches and the same wind moves it about 24. The 170 also kicks about 22 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer and want a light-kicking load with a fast start. Pick the Custom 165-grain FTX if you want a little more energy at deer distances: it carries 952 ft-lbs at 200 yards against 905 for the Winchester. Pick the American Whitetail 170-grain if you would rather have a heavier soft-point bullet and don't mind the extra kick. If you need a subsonic load instead, Hornady's Subsonic 250-grain Sub-X leaves the muzzle at 1,050 fps.
- Kicks less than the Custom 165-grain FTX, which recoils about 15 percent harder in the same rifle
- Still moving at 1,648 fps at 200 yards, 120 fps faster than the American Whitetail 170-grain
- Drops about 9 inches less than the Barnes VOR-TX 170-grain TSX at 300 yards from a 100-yard zero
