Product Overview
Barnes markets the VOR-TX 170-grain for hunting medium game, and the bullet is the reason to choose it. The TSX in this load is a flat-base copper hollow point with no lead core. It is rated at a G1 BC of .198 and leaves the muzzle at 2,125 fps, and it still carries 766 ft-lbs at 200 yards.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 170-grain InterLock, a jacketed soft point of the same weight, the Barnes starts 75 fps slower and falls further behind with distance. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Barnes drops about 37 inches at 300 yards and the Hornady about 33. A steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the Barnes about 27 inches sideways by 300 yards and the Hornady about 24. Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 180-grain SP, the Barnes starts 25 fps faster, but the heavier Federal bullet holds its speed better: at 300 yards it drops about 34 inches and drifts about 22. The Federal kicks about 11 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the VOR-TX 170-grain if you want a copper bullet with no lead core for medium game and most of your shots fall inside 200 yards, where it drops about 10 inches from a 100-yard zero. Pick the American Whitetail 170-grain if you want the same bullet weight with a flatter path; Hornady markets it for deer. Pick the Power-Shok 180-grain if you want a heavier bullet that drifts less; Federal markets it for big game.
