Product Overview
Hornady markets its American Whitetail 170-grain for deer and other medium game. It uses Hornady's InterLock, a jacketed soft-point hunting bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .215, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps. At 200 yards it still carries 882 ft-lbs.
Compared with Hornady's Custom 165-grain FTX, the American Whitetail starts at the same 2,200 fps but loses more ground by 300 yards. From a 100-yard zero the 170 drops about 33 inches at 300 yards and the FTX about 30. A steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the 170 about 24 inches sideways by 300 yards and the FTX about 20. Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 180-grain SP, the Hornady starts 100 fps faster, yet the two end up close at 300 yards: the Federal drops about 34 inches and drifts about 22. The Federal also kicks about 7 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the American Whitetail 170-grain if you hunt deer and want a conventional soft point with a quick start. Pick the Custom 165-grain FTX if many of your shots are long ones, since it drops and drifts less. Pick the Power-Shok 180-grain if you want a heavier bullet; Federal markets it for big game. If you want a copper bullet with no lead core at the same weight, pick the Barnes VOR-TX 170-grain TSX.
