Product Overview
Hornady markets its Custom 165-grain FTX for medium game. The FTX is Hornady's hunting bullet with a soft, flexible polymer tip; this one is rated at a G1 BC of .250 and leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps. It still carries 952 ft-lbs at 200 yards.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 170-grain InterLock, the FTX starts at the same 2,200 fps but holds up better by 300 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the FTX drops about 30 inches at 300 yards and the 170 about 33. A steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the FTX about 20 inches sideways by 300 yards and the 170 about 24. Compared with the Barnes VOR-TX 170-grain TSX, the gap is wider: the Barnes starts 75 fps slower, drops about 37 inches at 300 yards and drifts about 27 in the same wind. In the same rifle the Hornady 170 kicks about 6 percent harder than the FTX, and the Barnes about 3 percent harder.
Buy the Custom 165-grain FTX if you hunt medium game and want a flatter path and less wind drift than either 170-grain load. Pick the American Whitetail 170-grain if you prefer a traditional soft point in a load Hornady markets for deer. Pick the Barnes VOR-TX 170-grain TSX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and can accept the extra drop.
