How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

Sellier & Bellot's 124-grain jacketed hollow point is the fastest defensive .357 SIG load in this group. The bullet is built for self-defense and leaves the muzzle at 1,476 fps with 597 ft-lbs of energy. Its power factor of 183 clears the 165 USPSA major floor by 18 points. From a 25-yard zero it drops 0.7 inch at 50 yards and 6.0 inches at 100, and it still carries 458 ft-lbs at the 50-yard line.

Federal HST 125 is the nearest in speed and still trails by 116 fps and 84 ft-lbs. Speer Gold Dot 125 and Winchester USA 125 give up 126 fps and 91 ft-lbs. Hornady Critical Duty 135 and Hornady Custom 147 both leave at 1,225 fps, 251 fps behind. The trade for that speed is recoil. In the same pistol the Sellier & Bellot has about 14 percent more recoil energy than the HST, 15 percent more than the Gold Dot or Winchester, and 17 percent more than the Critical Duty. It also shoots flatter than the HST and the Hornady Custom 147, with 1.2 inches less drop than the HST at 100 yards and 2.4 inches less than the 147. At 50 yards the gap to either is 0.4 inch or less, which nobody will see on a pistol target.

Buy it if you chose .357 SIG for velocity and want the most of it, and you already shoot a 125-grain load well enough to handle more recoil. Shooters who want faster follow-up shots should step down to the Gold Dot or HST. For practice, Fiocchi Range Dynamics 124 uses the same bullet weight, but this load has about 17 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol, so finish each range session with a magazine of the Sellier & Bellot itself.

Strengths
  • Power factor of 183 is the highest in this set, 13 points above the HST 125
  • Keeps 458 ft-lbs at 50 yards, 59 more than the HST 125 and 65 more than the Gold Dot 125
  • Drops 1.4 inches less than the Gold Dot 125 at 100 yards from a 25-yard zero
Limitations
  • Recoil energy is within 2 percent of the Hornady Custom 147, the hardest-kicking load here, so the lighter bullet does not make it any softer to shoot
  • Loses 331 fps between the muzzle and 100 yards, twice the 165 fps the Hornady Custom 147 gives up
  • By 100 yards the Hornady Custom 147 carries 6 ft-lbs more (367 to 361), so this load's 107 ft-lb muzzle lead over it is gone
