How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

At 1,350 fps and 506 ft-lbs, Winchester USA's 125-grain load is a plain jacketed hollow point built for self-defense. Its power factor of 169 makes USPSA major by 3.8 points. From a 25-yard zero it prints 0.9 inch low at 50 yards and 7.3 inches low at 100, so a center hold works out to 50 yards.

On paper it is the twin of Speer Gold Dot 125: the same speed, energy and power factor, and the same recoil energy in the same pistol. What differs is the bullet, a plain jacketed hollow point against Gold Dot's bonded one. Federal HST 125 is 10 fps faster with 7 ft-lbs more and about 1 percent more recoil energy, a gap too small to feel. Sellier & Bellot 124 is the big step up, running 126 fps faster with 91 ft-lbs more and about 15 percent more recoil energy than this load. The heavier bullets come in slower. Hornady Critical Duty 135 and Hornady Custom 147 both leave at 1,225 fps, 125 fps behind. The Critical Duty has about 1 percent less recoil energy than the Winchester; the Custom 147 has about 17 percent more.

Buy it if you want a hollow point at the caliber's standard speed and recoil and have no need for a bonded bullet. Shooters who want more velocity should look at the Sellier & Bellot, and those who want a heavier bullet at about the same recoil should look at the Critical Duty. For practice, Federal American Eagle 125 matches this load at 1,350 fps and 506 ft-lbs with the same recoil energy in the same pistol, so time on the range with it carries straight over to this load.

Strengths
  • Power factor of 169 is 3.4 points above the Hornady Critical Duty 135
  • 56 ft-lbs more muzzle energy than the Critical Duty 135 and 16 more than the Hornady Custom 147
  • Makes major with 30 fps to spare, since a 125-grain bullet needs 1,320 fps
Limitations
  • Sellier & Bellot 124 has 14 more points of power factor (183 to 169)
  • Its 3.8-point margin over major is 1.2 points thinner than the HST 125's
  • Plain jacketed hollow point rather than the bonded bullet of the Gold Dot 125, which matches it in speed and energy
