Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 175-grain ELD-X for large game. The ELD-X is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, built for low drag and rated at a G1 BC of .689. It leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 41 inches at 500.
Compared with Federal's Premium 175-grain ELD-X, there is nothing to separate them on paper: Federal loads the same bullet to the same 3,000 fps, and every figure in the trajectory table matches. Compared with Nosler's Trophy Grade 175-grain AccuBond LR, which also leaves at 3,000 fps but has a G1 BC of .648, the ELD-X holds a small edge downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes both bullets about 12 inches sideways, and the ELD-X carries 2,141 ft-lbs to the AccuBond's 2,072. The Nosler and the Federal kick the same as the Hornady in the same rifle.
Buy the Precision Hunter if you hunt large game at longer range and want a bullet that gives up little to the wind. Federal's Premium 175-grain ELD-X is an equal choice. Pick the Nosler AccuBond LR if you prefer a bonded bullet; it gives up almost nothing downrange. Pick Hornady's Outfitter 160-grain CX if you need a bullet with no lead; it kicks about 16 percent less, but the same wind pushes it about 14 inches at 500 yards.
