The 7mm PRC is Hornady's non-belted 7mm magnum for elk, mule deer and other big game at long range, standardized by SAAMI in 2022. It was built around long, heavy .284" bullets and fits a standard-length long action with a magnum bolt face. Loads on this page run 150 to 180 grains at 2,975 to 3,100 fps.
For elk, the 175 grain ELD-X and AccuBond LR are the long-range picks, and the 160 grain CX and 150 grain TTSX are copper options that hold together on big animals at closer range. The 180 grain ELD Match is a target load. It is not built for game. It does not interchange with the 7mm Remington Magnum; buy by the barrel stamp.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Against 7mm Remington Magnum: 140 to 240 fps more with the 175 grain loads on this page, from a non-belted case.
- Against 6.5 PRC: heavier 160 to 180 grain bullets for elk-sized game.
- Against .300 Win Mag: similar reach with less recoil.
- Factory loads include both copper and lead-core long-range hunting bullets.
Cons
- Against 7mm Remington Magnum: far fewer factory loads and rifles.
- Against 6.5 PRC: more recoil and a longer action.
- Shorter barrel life than a standard cartridge like the .270 Winchester.
- Its advantages over 7mm Rem Mag show up mainly past 400 yards.
