Product Overview
Federal markets its Premium 175-grain ELD-X for big game at long range. It is loaded with Hornady's ELD-X, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .689, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 2,141 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 175-grain ELD-X, the Federal load matches in every figure: the same bullet at the same 3,000 fps, with the same trajectory, wind drift and recoil. Compared with Federal's own Terminal Ascent 170-grain, a bonded, polymer-tipped bullet, the ELD-X starts 50 fps faster and holds up slightly better in wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the ELD-X about 12 inches sideways and the Terminal Ascent about 13. The Terminal Ascent carries 1,935 ft-lbs at 500 yards and kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Federal ELD-X for big-game hunts where shots may stretch toward 500 yards and wind is a factor. The Hornady Precision Hunter is the same load, so either will do. Pick the Terminal Ascent if you want a bonded bullet and a little less recoil. Pick Weatherby's Select Plus 150-grain Swift Scirocco if recoil matters most; it kicks about 25 percent less.
