Federal markets its Terminal Ascent 170-grain for big game at long range. The Terminal Ascent is a bonded, polymer-tipped hunting bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .646, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,950 fps.
Compared with Nosler's Trophy Grade 175-grain AccuBond LR, another bonded, tipped bullet built for long range, the two are very close on paper: the Nosler has a G1 BC of .648 and starts 50 fps faster. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the Terminal Ascent about 13 inches sideways and the AccuBond about 12. Compared with Federal's Premium 175-grain ELD-X, the Terminal Ascent gives up a little more: the same wind pushes the ELD-X about 12 inches at 500 yards, and the ELD-X keeps more energy at that distance. The Nosler and the ELD-X both kick about 8 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Terminal Ascent if you want a bonded long-range hunting bullet and a little less recoil than the Nosler or the Federal ELD-X.
