Product Overview
Hornady markets its Outfitter 160-grain CX for large game, as part of its lead-free Outfitter line. The CX is a polymer-tipped bullet made of solid copper alloy with no lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .596, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps.
Compared with Fiocchi's Hyperformance 150-grain TTSX, the other copper bullet with no lead core, the CX starts 100 fps slower but handles wind better. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the CX about 14 inches sideways and the TTSX about 19. The TTSX kicks about 9 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 175-grain ELD-X, which leaves the muzzle at the same 3,000 fps, the CX gives up some ground: the same wind pushes the ELD-X about 12 inches at 500 yards, and the ELD-X carries 2,141 ft-lbs at that distance to the CX's 1,804. The ELD-X also kicks about 20 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Outfitter CX if you need or want a bullet with no lead and expect shots out to 500 yards in open country. Pick the Fiocchi TTSX if a lighter kick matters more to you than wind drift. Pick the Precision Hunter 175 if lead is fine and you want less wind drift and more energy at 500 yards; Federal's Premium 175-grain ELD-X uses the same bullet at the same speed.
