Best 6.5 PRC Ammo

Every load we price, sorted by cost per round delivered to your state

We track 10 6.5 PRC loads from 3 dealers. The cheapest delivered to AR, shipping included, is Winchester Match 6.5 PRC 140gr HPBT MatchKing Ammo at $1.92 a round. By use: Competition from $1.92 and Hunting from $1.99.

The 6.5 PRC is Hornady's short-magnum 6.5 for deer, pronghorn and sheep at long range, standardized by SAAMI in 2018. It fires the same .264" bullets as the 6.5 Creedmoor, but its fatter case pushes them roughly 250 fps faster: the 143 grain ELD-X is listed at 2,960 fps here, against 2,700 fps in the Creedmoor. It fits a short action with a magnum bolt face.

Most loads on this page are hunting loads. The 120 to 127 grain copper bullets (TTSX, LRX, Hammer) run fastest and hold together on heavier animals. The 140 to 143 grain ELD-X, Ballistic Tip and Fusion loads carry more weight for long shots. The two 140 grain match loads are for targets. Fire only 6.5 PRC ammo in a 6.5 PRC rifle; it does not interchange with 6.5 Creedmoor.

6.5 PRC Trajectory

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros

  • Against 6.5 Creedmoor: about 250 fps more with the same 140 to 143 grain bullets, for less drop and drift.
  • Fits a short action, so the rifle is shorter and lighter than a long-action magnum.
  • Recoils less than a 7mm or .30 caliber magnum.
  • Most factory loads use bonded, tipped or copper hunting bullets.

Cons

  • Against 6.5 Creedmoor: more recoil and noticeably shorter barrel life.
  • Against 7mm PRC: lighter bullets, so less energy for elk at long range.
  • Needs a magnum bolt face, so a Creedmoor rifle cannot be rebarreled to it without a bolt change.
  • The extra velocity matters little inside 400 yards.
