Federal markets Terminal Ascent for big game at long range. The 130-grain Terminal Ascent is a bonded, polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a G1 BC of .532, the highest of the hunting loads it is compared with, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,362 ft-lbs.
Compared with Federal's Fusion 140-grain, a heavier bonded soft point, the Terminal Ascent starts 75 fps faster and kicks about 11 percent less in the same rifle. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes the Terminal Ascent about 16 inches sideways and the Fusion about 20. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Terminal Ascent drops about 44 inches at 500 and the Fusion about 50. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX Long Range 127-grain, a copper bullet with no lead core, the two start at nearly the same speed, but the same wind pushes the Barnes about 18 inches. The Barnes kicks about 4 percent less.
