Hornady markets its 147-grain ELD Match for target shooting, and it carries the heaviest bullet of the 6.5 PRC match loads on the site. The ELD Match is Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet with a boat tail. Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .697, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,910 fps.
Compared with Barnes' Precision Match 145-grain, the Hornady flies almost the same path. Both leave the muzzle at 2,910 fps. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 12 inches sideways, which is how far off your aim point the wind alone moves the bullet. Zeroed at 100 yards, both drop about 44 inches at 500. The Hornady kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Fiocchi's Hyperformance Match 140-grain RDF, the Hornady starts 70 fps slower and drops a little more: from the same zero, the Fiocchi drops about 42 inches at 500. The Fiocchi also kicks about 7 percent less.
Buy the Hornady 147 if you shoot steel and paper out to 500 yards and want a heavy match bullet with a polymer tip. Pick the Barnes 145 if you would rather have an open-tip bullet on nearly the same path with a little less recoil. Pick the Fiocchi 140 if a flatter path and lighter recoil matter more to you than bullet weight. The ELD Match is a target bullet. For hunting, Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 143-grain for large game; it carries the polymer-tipped ELD-X hunting bullet and leaves the muzzle 50 fps faster.
