Product Overview
Weatherby sells the Select Plus 124-grain as a hunting load. It uses the Hammer Custom, a copper hollow point with no lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .478. At 3,100 fps it has the fastest start of the hunting loads it is compared with, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 42 inches at 500, the flattest path of them all.
Compared with Federal's Terminal Ascent 130-grain, a bonded lead-core bullet, the Weatherby starts 100 fps faster and drops less, but the Terminal Ascent handles wind a little better. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes the Weatherby about 17 inches sideways and the Terminal Ascent about 16, and from the same zero the Terminal Ascent drops about 44 inches. The Terminal Ascent also kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Fiocchi's Hyperformance 120-grain TTSX, another copper bullet, the Weatherby starts slightly faster and holds its lead: the same wind pushes the TTSX about 20 inches. The TTSX kicks about 7 percent less.
Buy the Weatherby if you want a copper hunting bullet with a fast start and a flat path out to 500 yards. Pick the Terminal Ascent if you don't need a copper bullet, want a little less wind drift and don't mind the extra recoil. Pick the TTSX if you want a copper bullet with lighter recoil and your shots stay closer.
