Product Overview
Barnes markets its VOR-TX Long Range 127-grain for big game hunting. It is loaded with the Barnes LRX, a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core and a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .468. It leaves the muzzle at 3,010 fps and still carries 1,426 ft-lbs at 400 yards.
Compared with Fiocchi's Hyperformance 120-grain TTSX, another copper bullet, the Barnes starts 60 fps slower but passes it before 300 yards. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes the Barnes about 18 inches sideways and the TTSX about 20. The TTSX kicks about 9 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Terminal Ascent 130-grain, a bonded lead-core bullet, the two leave the muzzle at nearly the same speed, but the Terminal Ascent does better downrange: the same wind pushes it about 16 inches, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 44 inches at 500 against about 46 for the Barnes. The Terminal Ascent kicks about 4 percent harder.
Buy the Barnes if you want a copper bullet for big game and expect longer shots: it handles wind better than the lighter TTSX. Pick the TTSX if your shots stay closer and lighter recoil matters more. Pick the Terminal Ascent if you don't need a copper bullet and want less wind drift. Weatherby's Select Plus 124-grain is the copper load with the flattest path: from the same zero it drops about 42 inches at 500 yards, and it kicks about the same as the Barnes.
