Product Overview
Hornady markets its 325-grain LEVERevolution for large game. The FTX bullet has a soft polymer tip, which Hornady says is safe in tubular magazines. It carries a G1 BC of .230 and leaves the muzzle at 2,000 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 11 inches at 200.
Compared with Underwood's +P 325-grain Xtreme Hunter, the Hornady starts 275 fps slower, and from the same 100-yard zero the Underwood drops only about 8 inches at 200. The Underwood kicks about 13 percent harder in the same rifle, and Underwood says it is not for antique firearms such as Trapdoor Springfields. Compared with Federal's HammerDown 300-grain, a bonded soft point built for lever guns, the Hornady starts faster and drops a little less: the HammerDown drops about 12 inches at 200 yards. The HammerDown kicks about 21 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the LEVERevolution if you hunt large game out to 200 yards and want a flatter path than the HammerDown without the recoil of the Underwood +P. Pick the Underwood +P if your rifle is rated for +P loads and you want less drop. Pick the HammerDown if recoil matters more to you than an inch of drop. For a heavier bullet, HSM's 430-grain Bear Load, which HSM markets for big game hunting, carries 1,544 ft-lbs at 200 yards to the Hornady's 1,441.
