Product Overview
Underwood markets its +P 325-grain Xtreme Hunter for hunting and self-defense. The Xtreme Hunter is a solid one-piece bullet with no lead core. It carries a G1 BC of .23 and leaves the muzzle at 2,275 fps; zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 8 inches at 200. Underwood loads it to +P pressure and says it is not for antique firearms such as Trapdoor Springfields, so check that your rifle is rated for +P before you buy it.
Compared with Hornady's 325-grain LEVERevolution, the Underwood starts 275 fps faster. From the same 100-yard zero, the Hornady drops about 11 inches at 200 yards, and it kicks about 12 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Buffalo Bore's 350-grain JFN, which Buffalo Bore also says is not safe in every .45-70 rifle, the Underwood starts 130 fps faster and kicks about 9 percent less.
Buy the Underwood +P if your rifle is rated for +P and you want a flatter path than the LEVERevolution; at 200 yards it still carries 1,909 ft-lbs. Pick the LEVERevolution if you want less recoil from a polymer-tipped bullet that Hornady markets for large game. Pick the Buffalo Bore JFN if you want a heavier bullet and your rifle is on Buffalo Bore's approved list. Underwood also loads the same bullet in a slower 325-grain Xtreme Hunter. For a much heavier bullet, HSM's 430-grain Bear Load, which HSM markets for big game hunting, kicks about 40 percent harder in the same rifle.
