Product Overview
Federal built its 300-grain HammerDown for lever-action rifles and markets it for big game. The bullet is a bonded soft point: the lead core is bonded to the copper jacket. It is rated at a G1 BC of .290 and leaves the muzzle at 1,850 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 200.
Compared with Federal's Fusion 300-grain SP, the HammerDown flies the same path. Both start at the same speed with the same G1 BC, and both still carry 1,308 ft-lbs at 200 yards. The difference is purpose: Federal built the HammerDown for lever guns and the Fusion line for deer hunting. Compared with Fiocchi's 300-grain HPFN, the HammerDown starts 50 fps slower but holds its speed better, and at 200 yards the Fiocchi carries 1,133 ft-lbs. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the HammerDown about 9 inches sideways and the Fiocchi about 12.
Buy the HammerDown if you hunt big game with a lever-action rifle and take most shots inside 200 yards. Pick the Fusion 300-grain SP if you want the same trajectory from the line Federal built for deer hunting. Pick the Fiocchi HPFN if you want a hollow point and your shots stay close, since it drops and drifts more by 200 yards. If you want a heavier bullet, HSM's 430-grain Bear Load, which HSM markets for big game hunting, still carries 1,544 ft-lbs at 200 yards.
