Product Overview
Fiocchi markets its 300-grain HPFN, part of its Field Dynamics line, for big game. The bullet is a hollow point with a flat nose. It is rated at a G1 BC of .213 and leaves the muzzle at 1,900 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 13 inches at 200.
Compared with Remington's 300-grain SJHP, the Fiocchi is a twin on paper: the same muzzle speed, the same G1 BC and the same path out to 200 yards. The Remington uses a semi-jacketed hollow point, so the choice between them is bullet style. Compared with Federal's HammerDown 300-grain, a bonded soft point built for lever guns, the Fiocchi starts 50 fps faster but loses that lead by 200 yards. There the HammerDown drops about 12 inches and still carries 1,308 ft-lbs, against 1,133 for the Fiocchi.
Buy the Fiocchi if you want a 300-grain hollow point for big game and your shots stay inside 200 yards. Pick the Remington SJHP if you prefer its semi-jacketed bullet; nothing on the trajectory table separates the two. Pick the HammerDown if you shoot a lever-action rifle and want a little less drop and more energy at 200 yards. For a heavier bullet, HSM's 430-grain Bear Load, which HSM markets for big game hunting, keeps 1,544 ft-lbs at 200 yards, but it kicks about 96 percent harder in the same rifle.
