Product Overview
Federal markets its Fusion 300-grain SP for big game, from a line it built for deer hunting. The Fusion bullet is a soft point with its copper jacket bonded to the lead core. It carries a G1 BC of .290 and leaves the muzzle at 1,850 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 200.
Compared with Federal's HammerDown 300-grain, the Fusion matches it number for number: the same muzzle speed, the same G1 BC, the same drop at 200 yards and 1,308 ft-lbs apiece there. What sets them apart is the rifle Federal had in mind, since it built the HammerDown for lever-action rifles. Compared with Federal's Fusion 300-grain TSX, a copper hollow point with no lead core, the SP starts 75 fps slower and kicks about 4 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Fusion SP if you hunt deer or other big game inside 200 yards and want a bonded soft point. Pick the HammerDown if you shoot a lever-action rifle and want the load Federal designed around one; you give up nothing on the trajectory table. Pick the Fusion TSX if you need a bullet with no lead. If you prefer a hollow point, Remington's 300-grain SJHP starts 50 fps faster but drops about 13 inches at 200 yards. If recoil bothers you, Grizzly's 300-grain JHP, which Grizzly markets for deer and elk, starts at 1,500 fps and kicks about 16 percent less than the Fusion SP.
