Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 200-grain ELD-X for large game, and it is the heavy-bullet choice in .300 Weatherby. The ELD-X is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .597. It leaves the muzzle at 2,960 fps, slower than the 180-grain loads, but it holds its speed well and still carries 2,191 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards.
Compared with Weatherby's 180-grain TTSX, the ELD-X starts 272 fps slower and still gives up less to the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 14 inches sideways and the TTSX about 16. The ELD-X kicks about 12 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock, the ELD-X trades a few inches of drop for less drift. Zeroed at 100 yards, the ELD-X drops about 44 inches at 500 yards and the InterLock about 40; the same wind pushes the InterLock about 18 inches.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt large game in open country, where shots can stretch toward 500 yards and wind is the harder problem. Pick Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core; it kicks about 10 percent less. Pick the Select InterLock if most of your shots fall inside 300 yards and you want the flatter path. If recoil matters most, Remington's Core-Lokt 180-grain PSP kicks about 14 percent less than the ELD-X in the same rifle.
