The .300 Weatherby Magnum is a long-range cartridge for elk, moose and open-country game, chambered in Weatherby Mark V and other magnum bolt rifles. Roy Weatherby built it in 1944 by blowing out the belted .300 H&H case. It fires the same .308" bullets as the .300 Win Mag, typically 150 to 250 fps faster, and needs a full magnum-length action.
The loads here cover the usual weights. A 165 or 180 grain InterLock at 3,240 to 3,390 fps suits deer, sheep and pronghorn. The 200 grain ELD-X is the pick for elk and moose at distance. Weatherby publishes its velocities from long test barrels, so expect less from a shorter barrel. Fire only .300 Weatherby Magnum ammo in a .300 Weatherby rifle; .300 Win Mag and .300 H&H are different cases.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Over .300 Win Mag: roughly 150 to 250 fps more with the same bullet, for flatter trajectory past 400 yards.
- Heavy 200 grain bullets still start near 2,960 fps, enough for elk and moose at long range.
- Uses the same .308" bullets as every other .30 caliber, so bullet choice for handloaders is wide.
Cons
- More recoil and muzzle blast than .300 Win Mag, which hurts practice time and shot placement.
- Needs a magnum-length action, so rifles are longer and heavier than standard long-action guns.
- The large powder charge wears barrel throats faster than a .30-06 or .300 Win Mag.
- Weatherby chambers have long freebore to keep pressure down, so bullets jump far to the rifling and some loads group wider than in a .300 Win Mag.
